Family Night: 05/01/2009

Joshua's night to pick

Agenda
7:00 - 8:00 pm ... World of Warcraft
8:00 - 8:30 pm ... Sorry, the boardgame
8:30 - Move begins, Ernest Goes to Camp

Menu
Personal home-made pizzas with Heathers famous pizza crust - ok maybe it's not famous - but it darn well should be!

Comments
Master Joshua of Castle Horton, always, always has a plan for family night. A rigid schedule to which he expects, everyone should adhere. I can respect that. I enjoy Josh's family nights and the personal spin he puts on it with his signature structure. We don't always get to stick to the schedule exactly - well heck we usually are off a tad - but it's still fun!

Family night: 04/24/2009

Heather's Night to Pick

Agenda
Play a new board game - "Worst Case Scenario"
Watch a movie: Ernest Scared Stupid

Menu
Pizza, pizza, pizza!

Notes and game review
This was a good family night. Heather's nights are usually very good and for once we had a very good time with a board game (we have organizational issues when taking turns but that's a post for another time).

Before we review the board game let me just say that the movie choice was a stroke of genius. Everyone has those movies that they crack open only from time-to-time, and most times it doesn't seem like it will be a hit because "oh we've seen that 1000 times already" - and then you watch it. And it's funny all over again. That was what happened tonight. Huge fun! Great old movie. I'm a big Ernest fan and darn it Jim Varney, I miss you dude! Knowhutimean?

So the board game. I'd ... we'd been waiting to play this for a long time. And it didn't disappoint. It was fast-paced and educational as well .. along with being pretty doggone fun. It gets a high recommendation from yours truly. Gameplay is as simple as it gets. Take a turn, answer a question, if you get it right - you get to move .. next player. See? Simple.

Oh sure you probably can't have a steady diet of it. Some folks might get bored because this game doesn't provide distraction really. Its not flashy, not tons of fun colors or fancy bells and whistles ... but rather just a good game, providing a base of enjoyment that relies on family faces and relationships to mix in with it to make the evening fun ... but I think that's a good thing and rather like that about it :)

Family night: 04/17/2009

Dad's night to pick

Menu:
Pizza from a new joint (to us) .. Stephanina's .. the word from us that its pretty good stuff. I still enjoy Heather's pizza better than this but I have guilt asking her to cook on family night. So I'm always on the lookout for really good pizza, on the cheap. This was pretty low cost and very good pizza - thin crust is all they do - and that's coolio with cause I'm all about the toppings. We kept it simple and went with beef and pepperoni. It was delish!

Agenda:
Pizza (duh, it IS family night at the Horton's - it's all we eat on Friday's folks).
Two movies: The Day the Earth Stood Still (the new version) and Bolt

Comments:
Quick review on TDTESS. I really enjoyed this. Even Josh commented on the fact that he liked it. Heather also thought it was pretty good. Honestly I guess the trailer to this movie had jaded me to it. From the trailer one got the impression that Hollywood was going to royally boof the old movie and try to reinvent it. It was very very close to the original classic. The effects were seriously updated and there were some twists that the original didn't have. GORT was very very cool - he's always been my very favorite movie robot. I got the feeling that if the technology had been up to the task back in 1951, that perhaps this is the story they would have told back then. I enjoyed this movie. And I still like Keanu Reeves; I've been a fan of his since he played Ted "Theodore" Logan. You have to admire a man who has built his entire career on the ability to say the word "whoa". Excellent work Ted.

Family night: 04/10/2009

Joshua's night to pick

Menu
Homemade pizza!

Agenda (Josh had a schedule for us)
6:00-6:30: Eat dinner
6:30 - 7:30: Abuse the parental units with a virtual flogging in Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii.
7:30: Watch movie "Bedtime Stories" starring Adam Sandler.

How it "really" shook out ....
Actually we came pretty close. We were a bit late starting with the eats (mom was on time but Dad and Thing 1 were late of course). The pizza was awesome! Heather should go into business making these and let me stay home, clean house, and blog all day - mental note to work on that master plan later - but this is really, really good pizza!

The flogging was dead-on. As usual. Joshua brought the pain. Its comical to watch the old people play video games but not so comical to be one. I resisted the urge this time to tell the "back in my day" stories of how simpler video games were and how awesome I was back then. Sigh. The glory days.

The pregnant lady did sorta fall asleep on the couch for a time during our intermission between gaming and movie. I used that time to research moves for Meta-Knight in hopes of someday NOT dying in the first 60 seconds of Brawling with Thing One.

And finally the movie. If you haven't seen this one yet, tis at least worth a rental. We enjoy Adam Sandler and his family-type movies are generally pretty fun. Don't look for any deep plot; just have fun with it - tis a good time.

That's all until next week!

Agenda
Gaming for a bit, play some WoW.
Then Kung Fu Panda for the remainder of our entertainment till time for the kid to hit the hay.

Comments
I may be headed out to WM tonight at midnight to pick up Twilight since it releases at 12:01am. Yeah I'm that kind of crazy. Come on, come with me ... stop acting old! :)

Family night: 03/13/2009

Heather's night to pick

Agenda:
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars (new episode)
  • 30 - 40 mins of Super Smash Bros Melee
  • Movie: Scooby Doo 2
Menu:
  • Pizza hut pizza, our old standby, 1 medium pepperoni and 1 medium hamburger
  • I should note here that my darling wife and put inhuman amounts of parmesan cheese on their pizza. It's something you have to see to believe really.
Thoughts:
  • I brought up tonight for family discussion that we need to figure a way to occasionally take our family nights up a notch, making them more special than any other night during the week (besides having just a regular meal of pizza).
  • So we're talking about this. Ideas are welcome. We're simple folk so the less complicated the better for us hobbit-types.

Family night: March 06, 2009

Rut roh .. rits rus ree rand ru ruppy ...

This evening the attendance for family night will be halved. Tis just me and "the stormer" for this one.

As I write this Josh is currently doing battle with mom on the front porch, her wielding the clippers while trying to raise her skill in hair-cutting to 375. He is practicing his ability to dodge, parry and stall. Storm is contributing by attempting to eat the hair. Whoops, Storm was just relegated to inside the house. Now Storm watches at the window, while barking in protest at what she clearly interprets as some from of child abuse. Yep, those haircuts are brutal doggie ... you go girl.

Why am I live-blogging this? So you, dear reader, may laugh about it of course! Well and because this won't be a typical family night, I need filler, much filler for this post.

Later today I think Storm and I will head to Treats Unleashed. There I will purchase her some family night treats. Then later while I watch a movie, read, or perhaps even log some WoW time (if I can find some friends ... *cough* Brian and Jenn *cough* ... Storm can enjoy her treat. It should be a relaxing night with just me and the puppy laying around in the floor ... good times.

Madagascar 2

O ... M ... G :)

I haven't seen an animanted movie this funny in a long time, particularly not a sequel. Even the Shrek sequels may not be funnier than this. Wow!

I'm such an easy laugh I guess but this had me crying in more than a few parts. With some certainty I can easily say that my family was concerned about me, and my laughing/snorting got a little outta control. :) Good times!

Its not often that I laugh so hard that I can't stop and those little "giggle quakes" keep happening. But the penguins ... omg, the penguins ... so funny!

When the plane "launched" from Madagascar I was cry-laughing so hard I missed part of the movie. We watched that part of the movie over this morning and I lost it all over again. The lead penguin just slays me. As does King Julien ... who had some very funny, nearly awkwardly funny moments and those made me laugh all the more.

There were so many good lines from this movie its hard to repeat them all. But to say this is better than the first movie is an understatement. Its one of those rare times where the first movie really seems, in hindsight, like it was created as an intro to the second movie with the second movie being the one intended all along.

"Sir we only have 2 passengers unaccounted for."
"Thats a number I can live with!"

Hahahaha, that makes me laugh just to write it down. And then when the penguins were the only ones who could mess with the old lady from Yonkers ... when they backed up just to ram her again with the Jeep ... funny stuff!

/wipes tear .... ahhhhhh ... my kinda movie! And yeah we ALL loved it!

Thanks for the recommendation Jenn!

Family night: 02/27/2009

Rob's night to pick

Agenda:

  • Double feature movie night! Now playing ...
  • Madagascar 2
  • Cheaper By the Dozen 2

Menu:

  • Homemade pizza! Man that wife of mine can make some dough and flat throw down a great pizza. I'd rather have this than any pizza place I've been too.

Thoughts:
  • Once we move, I wonder if the Coppocks will be interested in coming over for a family night get together sometime? I for one really, really wanna do that. :)

Family night: 02/20/2009

This family night was Josh's night to pick. We went out for a rare trip to Chuck E Cheese. Not Dad's favorite place I have to tell you but we had fun nonetheless. We basically go there for the video games and pizza. Even when Josh was little, he never was really into the rodent of unusual size. :P

So we had some pizza, spent lots of tokens on games and hung out and had a good time. Then we headed back home. Once back we greeted our always-super-happy-to-see-us, puppy dog. After things settled down, Josh picked out the movie which seems to be all the rage on Nick right now Spectacular.

I have to say it was pretty good really. I was surprised. Yeah sure, lots of cheesy musical numbers but once you get your teeth set for that, you're okay really. The story was a basic one of morals, choosing to keep your promises even though it might not be comfortable; all that kinda stuff.

Not being a *huge* musicals fan, I still liked it. Cause wow, those kids can all sing and dance. Tis a far cry from The Sound of Music (which is a guilty pleasure of mine). The music, being more modern and upbeat was very cool. There was no language, it was an easy story to follow, and there wasn't any *sexiness* in it that would rule it out for younger kids even. It was just good, clean fun.

Later!

Agenda:
Double feature movie night, the part of threes ... (X-men 3 and Karate Kid part 3). My mom is stopping by for the weekend so we'll be visiting with her too.

Hmmm, I wonder if the Coppocks will ever drop by for a visit after we move to TX? Hope so!

Family night: 01/24/2009

Heather's night to pick

Menu:
Pizza, well or in this case 'meatsa'.

See, Heather fixed this great pizza, sans crust, since I'm skipping breads/sugars for awhile. She made the 'crust' from ground beef. It was fabulous! I mean really ... an all meat, all sauce, pepperoni and cheese (and in my case hot peppers) pizza. What's wrong with that, right?

Agenda:
This night, we just hung out and watched Encino Man together. Josh is loving that movie. And I enjoy getting to see him introduced to the "classics", lol Then afterwards we met our very good friends online for some WoW time which was really fun and always is. I hope they keep us. :)

Alone for family night

Well this family night is a rare one. It's just me and Storm (our German Shepherd Dog), or as I like to call her, "the Stormer".

I have much to do this weekend and I thought I'd honor good ol' family night by stopping by the store (aka, Wal-mart) to buy her some nice treats and prepare myself a nice salad, to go with the crockpot chicken, since this night there shall be no pizza for moi.

Note to self ... never stop by the store to innocently shop for food when you're on a very low carb diet and are freaking between meals anyway. It can cause a brief shopping spree that ends up costing an unplanned $60 or so.

Ah well part of it was supplies for this weekend's mad cleaning I intend to pull off. But back to family night.

What is our agenda? As little as possible. I shall cook up some yummy pork for Storm to mix in with her kibble. I'll have my salad, chicken, and tea. And lastly we shall veg out in front of what looks to be the dumbest movie on the planet, quite possibly in the history of cinema, Starship Troopers 3.

Yes they made 3 of them. But no matter how bad the trainwreck, I sometimes just have to watch till the bitter end. What can I say. I endured "most" of the Wheel of Time series of books .. this cinematic poo poo should be a walk in the park.

However, if I never blog again, check in on me at home, the movie may have actually killed the last few brains cells I was struggling to keep in hand-holding distance of each other.

Hey tis Dad's night to pick so it means I get serving duty, puppy duty (and doody) and we watch a double-feature of my choosing.

On the playlist for tonight are the old Disney movies of:
Escape to Witch MountainReturn From Witch Mountain

The new movie, Race to Witch Mountain, is coming out in March so between now and then we'll be discussing the movies and reading the original novel. Honestly I didn't even know there was a book until recently so now I have to read that. Tis a sickness :)
